An Antipodean tradition: being interested in Other Countries’ Elections
It was all very exciting until the Guardian switched the DUP numbers from Opposition to the Conservative side, and then I remembered Sinn Fein hasn’t gone to Westminster since (looked it up) 1917. So out of 650 seats that leaves 643 which will matter in day to day business, with 322 needed for a majority vote in the House: the Conservatives have 315 so far, but DUP have 10. Which… well, the DUP’s position on a lot of matters, including Brexit, isn’t grand. They are far more conservative Protestant than the moderate Tories on social areas like abortion and gay rights. So are they going to negotiate on purely Irish issues, or are they going to promise support in return for concessions? And on what issues will the Tories be willing to concede?
Actually – it’s still exciting. Given how far Labour has come since the last election, and the collapse of UKIP, I’m remarkably hopeful. Still needs more proportional representation, even if that would lead to a couple of Ukippers sneaking back.
Do the Hailin* have elections? They have politics, but it isn’t clear how that works in resolving societal issues.
