Teen Wolf's now in closed-canon land; the best land of all.

Episode 620 aired last night & is a good send-off. Nobody I didn't want to die dies & some people I wanted to die do die. Yay! Of course, some people I wanted to die don't die, but you can't have everything.

And we get actual Derek/Stiles interaction! They're even allowed to touch each other for the grand finale! Clutchingly! In a flashback to catch us up & ace it is. Also provides fodder for many stories to fill in the details of that sketchy time.

Spoilers & video embed behind the cut.

Today is September 23rd, the deadline for final drafts from writers and rough drafts from artists. Remember writers, you still have tweaking time, but we do need to see that the story is pretty much complete. Artists, you have a little more time but you should have your rough drafts well under way and sent in.

If you haven't yet sent us your files and can't quite remember how to do that, just go here.

If we haven't heard from you by the end of the day, expect an email asking for an update. If anybody is having problems, drop us a line at prosbigbangtwo@gmail.com. We're here to help :)

Thanks for being part of this year's Big Bang, everyone. We're looking forward to so much new reading material and artwork!

TIFF 2017 - The Docs

The fest has been over for a few days, I saw 19 films, and I'm still feeling a bit on the loopy/exhausted side. But thought I'd put up short reviews of the two (excellent!) documentaries I saw, both by filmmakers in their 80s!

Ex Libris - The New York Public Library
Frederick Wiseman is one of the very best documentarians working today. For his films, he selects an organization or a place (the National Gallery, UC Berkeley and a boxing gym were some of his recent subjects), films in them for a few months and then spends a year editing his footage into a distillation of the organization and the people in it. And after so many years of doing this, he clearly knows what to look for when filming. This year his subject is the NYPL, and the result is utterly mesmerizing, really showing the breadth of what the library and all its branches does. There are budget and board meetings, readings/interviews by Elvis Costello and Ta-Nehisi Coates, parents discussing with librarians the need for books with accurate portrayal of African American history, NYPL staff answering client's questions, an ASL interpreter of Broadway plays explaining her working method, and so much else. The film is 3 1/2 hours long, but it's always fascinating. [personal profile] msmoat, I very much thought of you as I was watching.

Faces Places
Agnes Varda is just about the only woman director to come out of the French New Wave, and she alternates between fiction and documentary. For her latest doc, she teamed up with JR, a Bansky-like photographer who takes large-form photographs of people and pastes them onto buildings. The two of them set out on a road trip, taking pictures of people they find along the way and pasting them on buildings they find along the way. The premise sounds slight, and the tone is mostly playful, but it leads to some really lovely and profound moments. And the friendship that exists between the 80-something Varda and the 30-something JR is absolutely wonderful to watch in action. This film won the People's Choice documentary award at TIFF.

Summary: Tony's known Steve for ten years. With the formation of a brand-new team, with their bright future ahead of them, Tony's decided that it's finally time to ask Steve out. Now. Today. But his plans are interrupted when they have to go to the Savage Land -- where, of course, they are marooned together. Just the two of them, miles of jungle, profusely-bleeding injuries, and packs of vicious carnivorous dinosaurs. Not only are they not going to get to go on that date, they may not make it home alive at all.

This is my entry for the Superhusbands Aluminum Anniversary Anthology free digital zine, released today, of interest if you enjoy Steve/Tony. I collaborated with [personal profile] phoenixmetaphor, whose art can be found here.

The zine requirements were (a) nothing explicit and (b) no AUs and it took us FOREVER to come up with something that would be fun for me to write and her to draw until we hit upon DINOSAURS. Rawr. So here's some Savage Land h/c.

(Also, here is AIM Raptor, who did not make it into the story itself but is present in all of our hearts.)

I watched a pretty good docu about climate change that didn't tell me anything new, but did do a great job of providing a veritable smorgasbord of apocalyptic story ideas! Once we reach the 2 degrees celsius rise in global temperature (having already reached 1 degree), you got your fire-ravaged world, your flooded world, your earthquake-devastated world, your pandemic world, your starvation world....

19-2: The final episode of this show airs tonight. S4 has been tying up a bunch of loose ends as we approach the end. I'll miss the Ben & Nick partnership; also the new gay sarge & Bear & Tyler. I cheered when Bear finally got her promotion to sergeant! My 2 major hopes for the final episode are... Read more... )

Outlander: I'm only watching this show because I heard the gay guy might turn up some time during this 3rd series. Is he called John Gray or something like that? I haven't read the books so I have only the vaguest of notions.

The best things about this show remain the opening credits; the Scots accents & music; & the production values. My major reaction to 301-02 is: OMG, Frank, stop wasting your life being devoted to a woman who doesn't give a flying fuck about you! Wake up! Move on!

Teen Wolf: my watch for Derek & Stiles in the show's final few episodes continues. Spoilers 618 & 619 )

Upstart Crow: the other show about Shakespeare is back for its 2nd series! This one's the comedy rather than the (slightly) more serious Will that debuted this year. Only 1 episode into the new series so far, but I laughed several times, so it's promising.

recipe weekend

Sep. 17th, 2017 08:29 pm
kindkit: Two cups of green tea. (Fandomless: Green tea)
[personal profile] kindkit
Something I've cooked recently: Not a lot. I've been on a mission to eat all the summer peaches and tomatoes, and so there's been a lot of bread + tomatoes dressed with olive oil, and bread + tomatoes and mozzarella dressed with olive oil, and bread + tomatoes and ricotta dressed with olive oil. Also I have been "roasting" lots of red bell peppers under the broiler; I should freeze some, because I don't love the jarred kind.

I have baked a couple of nice things with peaches. Last weekend I made this peach and almond upside-down cake. I made a few modifications, as I tend to do: I increased the almond meal to 100 grams and cut the flour down to 155 grams, reduced the sugar in the cake batter to about 180 grams, omitted the almond extract since I didn't have any, and added about half a teaspoon of cardamom to the batter. It turned out very well despite the changes; the cake is a bit crumbly due to the extra almond meal but I don't mind that, and it's definitely sweet enough for my taste despite the reduced sugar.

Today I finally made a recipe I've wanted to try literally for years: Peach Slump with Ricotta Dumplings, from The Joy of Cooking.

more info and recipe under the cut )

Something I have concrete plans to cook in the near future: I don't have any concrete plans, except to keep eating tomatoes and peaches while they last.

Something I vaguely intend to cook someday: tomatoes and peaches aside, I am looking forward to autumn cooking. I want to bake my favorite apple cake again, and maybe a pumpkin roll or pumpkin muffins, and cook chicken with olives and preserved lemon, and make soups and bake bread. And maybe I'll try that Ottolenghi recipe for roasted vegetable tart, although I should probably do that soon while the veggies are still in season.
