"Not my fandom" fic links

Yes, I do read stories in other fandoms. I tend to prefer short stories, because if I don't "get" the characters within the first few hundred words I go for the back button - and a lot of fan stories rely heavily on understanding the characters and being emotionally connected to them.
This is a small list, so far. I'll probably add to it gradually as time goes by - but if you like and know other stories that might interest me, please add a link.

Date: 2010-04-07 03:04 pm (UTC)Heh, actually my gut instinct is to shout 'read Red!' as that might well be my all-time favourite fanfic ever - I never cease to be impressed by big_pink's narrative pacing and incredible plotting and use of language. But it's a long story, so prob not what you had in mind. So I'll just go away and quietly browse my archive to see what else I have stashed away in there...
Oh, but I should probably offer at least one nice short rec to counter-balance the long once above that I couldn't resist. Hmm. How about Conversational Winchester For Trolls by eloise bright - absolutely hilarious (plus a good intro to the basic psychology of the Winchester men *G*)
Now I'm trying to remember if I've read anything decent in any other fandoms - I'm sure I have, but it's been a while now so my memory is hazy.
(edit - apparently I have lost the ability to code links. Brain, where art thou?)

Date: 2010-04-08 09:06 am (UTC)what general kind of fic would you be interested in? Case, h/c, other?
I didn't start out with a plan, but what I've come up with so far seems to be very character-centred even though the styles are different. So your rec was spot on the mark!
Got more? Bring 'em on!

Date: 2010-04-08 03:00 pm (UTC)Character-centric fic, huh. Hmm. Okay, since you've made me think about fandoms I have dipped my toes into in the past, how 'bout a couple of Firefly fics? Aurora is a really good one - captures the spirit of the show while making full use of the plot to explore each of the characters and the dynamics between them. B-Team by the same author is also a good read.
And back when I used to watch Andromeda I was fond of Viridian 5's stories. Your New Harper: A First-Time Owner's Guide is set pre-series and explores the origins of one of the principle character dynamics on the show. Buyer Beware is also pre-series and very funny, while The Physics of Connection is set very early in the show's run and should be fairly accessible.
What do you not get about SN? 'Cause you know I can't resist throwing another couple of recs out there. Vocabulary by innie-darling and Red Beans and Rice by Janissa11 are both set pre-series, so explore something of the origins of the brotherly relationship that the show hinges around. Hanna Korossy's Magic is an interesting take on one of the lesser-pondered aspects of their lifestyle, while Nasty, Big, Pointy Teeth by ignipes is just a highly amusing case story. And I'm going to throw Pdragon76's Of Mute Insensate Things out there just for the sheer h/c of it.
And I still recommend Red, in spite of the length, just because it's a damn good story. As is anything written by big_pink, in fact!
Happy reading, if you should care to chance any of the above!
(edited because crap, I did it again!)

Date: 2010-04-07 09:56 pm (UTC)Thanks very much for the Astreiant rec, I do love those books and wish there was more fic (is there, and I just don't know about it?)

Date: 2010-04-08 09:12 am (UTC)Yeah, I wish there was more, but I guess someone has to write it. There are days when I'm almost confident enough to give it a go...

Date: 2010-04-08 10:43 am (UTC)Like "Cusp", the time between the two books is the most tantalising to me. I started one when I was fresh from reading the Points books, but didn't finish it. But there would be scope for lots more.
After reading your post, I went over to the comm and discovered that although I have a link from my lj, I'd somehow neglected to become a member. That's why I'd been missing out. *headdesk* Joined immediately.
You've done me a service, ma'am.

Date: 2010-04-08 10:53 am (UTC)I agree that the time between the books is pretty much a mystery and open for all sorts of interpretations.

Date: 2010-04-08 09:22 am (UTC)It's interesting that the stories I picked out were actually all rather descriptive character pieces - including the Alien one, where it was all emails and yet the different personalities, including the title character, were all visible.
Will think about the stories I like - and ponder whether they are accessible to people outside the fandoms!
Oh, do - and I know I have others to add to the list, I just don't remember them all now.

Date: 2010-04-08 09:44 am (UTC)I'm looking for long fics to entertain me in Portugal when I'm offline and can't just 'grab another' if that makes sense.
I'm really looking forward to re-reading and making notes on Waiting to Fall for The Reading Room - it's come at just the right time for me!
