Doctor D'amage came for tea tonight (pizza). We watched Van Helsing which I bought in a 3 for 25 quid deal in a Brighton shop in October.

I was expecting the worst but somehow, on the smaller than theatre sized (yet really rather bloody large) TV, it seemed more like a reasonably fun, "see what I can do, mum", parody of "Fearless Vampire Killers", with mountains of CGI. If a parody can be parodied - well, of course it can, and there were heaps of references to other genre flicks. Indiana Jones meets Dracula.

However I'm not sure the movie studio saw it in the same light & the tone was a bit confusing at times. I also thought that while Richard Roxburgh and David Wenham played up their parts for all they were worth (and hope it was worth more than a bit, guys) Hugh sometimes looked a bit uncomfortable. Plus his accent kept slipping.

OTOH Kate Beckinsdale in corset is always something to behold. It must be the leather (there's a particular Xena episode where the Amazons are saddling their horses and you can hear the slap and see the flexing of really good saddlery - on both horses and women - that has a similar effect on me). All those years at Pony Club are catching up. Oh, yeah.

I utterly ADORE this movie :) it's sheer unadulatered escapist rubbish and so much fun - it's one of my standard 'what can I watch that isn't too serious' DVDs. My favourite bit is when werewolf-Gabriel 'does a Wolverine' with his claws on the rock during the fight with Drac - LOL!! I LOVE it!!!

Oh and tonight we are going to watch Troy which I didn't see in the cinema because I'd read so many reviews saying it was rubbish. But Dr D pimped it by making us watch Achilles' first fight scene , where he runs at the giant warrior, sidesteps & leaps, then thrusts the point of his blade down into his heart. Confidence & skill personified.

No pansy wrist flicking foils in this movie it seems. So we are going to give it a go.

Ditto. The first time I watched it on a hired DVD, I spent most of the night telling Bodes what a load of CRRRRRRRRRRRRRAP it was and how glad I was I didn't spend the money to see it on the big screen hehehe.

But, I have actually bought it for $12 on sale - bargain - only cos Sean Bean is in it (he's Odysseus and the narrator) and Beano in a battle kilt is truly a sight to gladden the eye :) Other than that, IMHO Eric Bana shits all over Brad Pitt and Orlando should stick to being an elf. But that's me!

It's crap, but it's fun :) and the battle scenes ARE excellent. Enjoy!!

oh and it wasn't his heart - it was his L) trapezius, scored a major nerve plexus...great bit of CGI.

But that wouldn't have killed him, & he was definitely dead - penetration was deep enough to hit the aorta or other major vessel, I thought. Also felt the shot was a bit in front of his trapezius so less muscle mass to check the blade (OK, will slo mo it tomorrow to check).
