Heroines

I was trying to think of a word to describe heroines I like & I think I've found it. Robust. Not physically, necessarily, but character-wise. They take all the crap that gets dealt to them & manage themselves, and their relationships with men (or in at least one case, with women), or with life generally, without a fatal emotional disintegration. Under pressure, they make mistakes, but they bounce back. Or if they fall (as is human) they are able to pull themselves together again, stronger for the experience.

Some of my favourites:

Elizabeth Bennett
Susan Ivanova
Princess Leia
Jennifer Garner in Alias and Electra
Zoe from Firefly
Eowyn
Mavin Many-Shaped
The Bride
Barbara Gordon
Ripley
Black Canary
Saturn Girl
Wonder Woman
V.I. Warshawski
Ororo Munroe (Storm)
Willow

So who are your heroines? Do you recognise all of mine? Let me know.

Hi there

I saw your name in the Safehouse comments and checked you out on principle as a (presumed) fellow countrywoman. Like your list of heroines, and there's a fair few familiar names in there. Okay if I friend you?

Hi, go right ahead. I'm friendly *g*

I live in Sydney now (have for the past 26 years) but originally I'm from Invercargill, and my family is still there. Last trip home was in February.

I spent 3 years in Dunedin in the '70's, going to the University 1 year, then the Physio School for 2 more. Loved the feel of the place, if not the weather (iced-over hilly streets in mid-winter - NOT my idea of fun).

::coughs:: and you're from Invercargill orginally, eh? Personally, I prefer crisp to wet *g*

It wasn't the ice so much as the downhill slide - I never did learn to skate properly :-)
