End of an era time, that's for sure. Have you ever listened to Mahinarangi Tocker's tribute to him and Norgay? I'm planning on dragging it out sometime this evening.

I haven't. My cultural awareness of the NZ music scene is close to zip these days (my last NZ music purchase was a complete nostalgia trip - Howard Morrison Quartet!). Shall have to look into her work.

I thought first of a book about the climb that I read as a child and then of "Everest was also conquered". A fascinating life.

Seems weird to think of him being gone at all...

I know - I've known his name all my life...

Last of the great adventurers of our time? I saw him in Sloane Square once when I was a kid - my mum whispered it was 'him' in an awestruck voice so I've always remembered him.

I love your icon, something a bit Shakespearean about it..

Certainly an original, and a fine man. He spoke at our school once - I don't remember too much about it, but I think I remember he was talking about the work he was doing in Nepal.

The Times has links to the original headlines about the ascent, crediting both Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, and follow-up articles.

One of the giants of the 20th century, and a very modest, unassuming and compassionate man to boot.

Amazing when you think how much he packed into one life, isn't it? He'll be sadly missed.

One of the things that really struck me, as I was reading the tributes, was that his Himalayan Trust was set up to provide the things that the Sherpa people really wanted themselves. Not what he thought they needed. And naming it the "Himalayan Trust", not the "Sir Edmund Hillary Trust" - I bet if he'd tried to set it up today there would have been a ton of marketing and PR people trying to convince him of the benefits of leveraging his name. Bah! (sorry, rant mode off)

A great bloke and Kiwi through and through.
