OK, an age ago [livejournal.com profile] towerbridge2006 tagged me for the happiness meme. I haven't responded until now, not for lack of happiness but more to do with fleeting time and busyness.

I may not get all 10 tonight, but (taking a leaf from [livejournal.com profile] paris7am's lj) here's the first installment:

1. Someone at work gave me flowers today!
And really, it was for doing my job, but they'd had a lot of messy things to deal with over the past few weeks and I helped them out. Go me.

2. A few weeks back the Very Veterinary Dr D. came to dinner with his teen-aged daughter, who was visiting on holiday and looking for books to read to while away the time while dad was working/involved in non-daughter-friendly stuff. One of the books I offered was Naomi Novik's "Temeraire", which dad pooh-poohed after reading the blurb. Daughter went away with something else. A week later the same Dr D, while waiting at our house for NRMA assistance, picked up my copy of Robin Hobb's "The Liveship Traders" as well as the first two "Temeraire" novels. He returned them last week. He dismissed TLT as a bad read - "interesting ideas - pity the characters are so hateful and the plot contrivances far too much like Perils of Pauline to be believable". "Temeraire" on the other hand was "excellent, terrific - she can really write!". The guy's a serious historical reenactor and apparently the idea of dragons in the Napoleonic Wars had been a little too much when he'd first seen the book, but he changed his opinion totally. Win! \o/

Temeraire is definitely on my 'to read' list for this year. I've read the first two 'Assassin' books by Robin Hobb and love them. Planning to read all her books eventually, including the TLT series, though I've heard other people say they're not as good as her others.

I read TLT books before the Assassin series and I have to say I liked the latter more. The world-building in TLT is excellent, and I found myself liking the characters willy-nilly anyway, but I tend to agree with my friend about the repeat jeopardy business. Interested to find out what you think. I'd mark the third trilogy 2 out of 3 (for 2 good books and a misshapen catastrophe of a third. But that's just my opinion & I'm open to others.

Haven't read any Robin Hobb books but I thoroughly enjoyed Temeraire! Read 2 and 3 in rapid succession but for some reason am struggling with 4! Too much of a good thing, too quickly perhaps. And it is very easy to get sidetracked into zines!
Have you seen there is another C J Sansum coming shortly? Revelation, it's called, hardback in April (Get your name on the reservations list at the library now!) and paperback in October! Something to look forward to.

Flowers WOW. It is nice to know you are appreciated.

Don't know the books, but at least you have gained a fan for your favourite author.

I've read all Robin Hobb (and her writings as Megan Lindholme) and all Naomi Novik. I agree that Naomi is the better writer. I noticed recently that Robin always leaves you feeling depressed and that her more recent books are full of typos which is irritating. Did you know Naomi is the 'leading light' of the new Organisation for Transformative Works (OTW), designed to shelter and defend fanfic writers/vidders/etc?
